kdrama fluff and stuff

Of two minds about New Gisaeng Story

This drama is maddening. Just when I thought I’ve read it right, it proves me wrong. When I thought I wouldn’t last five episodes, it gives me a fifth episode that has me replaying a scene five times and counting. A couple I thought duller than a thesis on the medicinal properties of wood is now burning up the screen. A gisaeng house I didn’t care about has me wringing my hands now in worry because its fate hangs in the balance. I’m fast-forwarding scenes and re-watching others. I want to bail, because a sixth sense warns me that New Gisaeng Story (aka New Tales of Gisaeng, 2011) is going to make me pull my hair out and then some. But still I watch transfixed, one episode after another (finished Episode 14 yesterday), even though this seemingly drunk careening means I’ll soon be all caught up and chewing my nails waiting for new episodes to air.

I blame one person (and him alone) for my madness quandary.

Of all the lead actors available, the drama has to find a newbie whose chiseled features are unique and yet somehow familiar? I watch him and get Beautiful Days flashbacks of a Lee Min-chul played by Lee Byung-hun. That same smoldering gaze. I see his gait and think, “The guy’s so aristocratic-looking, he would have made a fantastic Prince Shin in Goong.” *ducks frozen swill hurled by incensed Joo Ji-hoon fans*

I mean, where did Sung Hoon come from? The man has no prior drama or movie to his name. Did he audition for his Ah Da-mo role or did the writer spy him in the gym one day and gasp, “Oh. My. God. Did you see that? I’m totally writing a drama called New Gisaeng Story and casting this hottie as the lead.”

Speaking of the writer, I have a few choice words for Im Sung-han on account of how her previous drama ended but will incubate them until her current drama is over. Forgiveness needs to be earned and can swing two ways. Getting Michael Blunck to reprise his role in said previous drama, and having him actually talk about said role (“Ho ho, I’m not just Kyle in name, I’m the same Kyle!”) is not funny at all and only serves to rekindle old wounds. On the other hand, a sweetener like Sung Hoon goes a long way in dispelling memories of cop-out finales.

Because, you know, this newbie can act. His inexperience may show in places; I’ve also yet to see him cry. (Want to prove you can act? Show me how many ways you can work those tear ducts without me hailing a cab in fright and fleeing to the hills. Sung Hoon did pull off a close and convincing semblance of tearful, though, as you can see from the image above.) His character hasn’t gone berserk; his world hasn’t collapsed, yet.

In other words, he hasn’t really been stretched in the fourteen episodes I’ve watched. But there’s promise here and it shows in small and telling ways, like a raised brow when Da-mo’s annoyed, or a slight smile that’s bemusement, affection, and quizzicality all at once. All portrayed most naturally. There’s also that deep, deep voice. And the eyes.

Playing Da-mo’s love interest is Im Soo-hyang. Her Dan Sa-ran is the stuff of dreams: tall, beautiful, elegant, educated, well-mannered. She cooks and cleans; she dances most gracefully. She’s the daughter you can count on, the student to make you proud, the girl to stop Da-mo dead in his tracks. She’s also mind-numbingly boring.

Sa-ran reminds me of Yoon Jung-hee’s Ha Dan-ah from Family Honor. They don’t look anything alike (except the height), but both have this prim and proper, passive and puritanical, air about them that drives me crazy. They always speak softly and gently. They never burn dinner or forget to feed the dog. Their faces are never grubby; their hair always shines. They act like prudes (“no skinship for us, we be pure”), but then get hugged and kissed within an inch of their lives, by guys to die for. What is the world coming to, seriously?

But just when I think I’m going to pass out from excessive envy yawning too much at Sa-ran’s scenes, what does she do? Come alive and show that she has some fire inside her, that’s what she does. In an Episode 5 scene that’s so riveting I can’t get enough of it (said scene also marking the point where I decided the drama was a keeper, even if I was far from being in love with it), she drives Da-mo almost to his knees.

(I think Im Soo-hyang has ways to go in her acting; her expressions thus far are fairly subdued and staying within safe confines. But she’s pleasant to watch and doesn’t irk, which is a relief. I would rather have a newbie underact than overact, frankly.)

Like the main romance in “said previous drama,” the one here will make you float out of your skin. I must hand it to Im Sung-han; she serves up these incredibly romantic relationships with plenty of sweet couple moments and out-of-the-blue touchy-feely scenes that will surely tussle for a place in the year’s best. Dreamy kisses (dream on, Da-mo!) and spine-tingling hugs like the one below, aided by a brainwave and a car’s compliant rear bonnet.

However…

If my memory serves me correctly (and I’m just being bitter and crotchety here, ignore me), our dear writer is also fond of The Ugly Misunderstanding Which Leads to The Too-Long Separation. New Gisaeng Story being all of fifty episodes, there is space aplenty for a déjà vu plot twist to rival the one in “said previous drama” where many an episode was spent with our leads mooning and moping because they were blissfully together for a spell but then got torn asunder and looked destined to stay forever torn asunder. Am I looking forward to that possibility? Hmm, if I love watching flies bicker at length over which trashcan reeks more, maybe.

But for now Da-mo and Sa-ran are enjoying gazing deeply into each other’s eyes and stealing the occasional cuddle. And I, for one, am content because it isn’t often that the two leads in a kdrama fall in love with each other at first sight. Usually one rubs the other the wrong way for starters, like the girl vomiting on the guy in an airplane or threatening to eat him for dinner. (He could extricate himself if he proffered a cow, but that’s a story for another day.) Sometimes the guy thinks the girl is a guy and totally freaks out. Sometimes the guy loves with all his heart but all the girl sees is another guy with hair like a nest. Not so for Da-mo and Sa-ran, thankfully.

Thus, do I love our lead couple in New Gisaeng Story, their chemistry alternately staid, sweet, and sizzling? Surely the answer is yes, although kindly refrain from asking whom I love more, the guy or the girl. But go ahead and ask if I love the cameo by Shin Gu. If I tell you I grinned from ear to ear, does that answer your question?

Shin Gu plays a mysterious old man who lives on a mountain and descends to Seoul several times a decade. He is revered by the ladies at Buyonggak, the country’s only surviving gisaeng house. Possessing penetrating insight, he sees the establishment’s head chef and instantly surmises (without having known her previously) that she is “pierced by maternal longing.” He is right, of course, because she has a secret daughter who is daily the object of much tenderness from her grandparents, parents, and aunt and uncle. The chef watches the daughter from afar, her tears spilling over each time. Which is all very strange, because supposedly the girl’s aunt is her biological mother and everyone in the family knows it except the girl. This girl, Ra-ra, happens to be a good friend of Sa-ran; she also happens to have A Very Serious Crush on Da-mo.

“Sa-ran and Ra-ra got switched at birth,” I tell no one in particular, my face fairly glowing from my honed-from-watching-too-many-kdramas smarts. “Sa-ran is the daughter of Ra-ra’s aunt.”

Turns out I’m dead wrong. Which is a good thing because I actually like being outsmarted by a drama. Nothing more deflating than knowing what’s coming a mile away. Catch me off-guard, Show, and see my respect and admiration for you growing.

Because suddenly Ra-ra’s grandparents do not annoy me anymore with their childish behavior. Suddenly I’m no longer just invested in Sung Hoon’s character the lead relationship in the drama, I now care about the older characters as well. I feel sorry for the lousy cards that life has dealt to some of them; I hope for missing family members to be speedily restored so that everyone sleeps well and stops waking up at two in the early morning, their faces awash with anxiety. I hope Da-mo and Sa-ran get hitched quickly (elope if you must, dear gorgeous pair), at least before the writer pulls a fast one on us and tosses Huge Obstacles That Can’t Be Surmounted in their path.

Sure, I still fast-forward many of the Buyonggak scenes involving the male employees. I still whine about the paucity of gisaeng scenes because isn’t this supposed to be a drama about gisaeng? Show us more of the beautiful ladies, please, and less of the men squabbling over who gets to accompany the Buyonggak director on her morning walks. And I’ll appreciate it very much, Show, if you will stop the abrupt cutting-away to unrelated and extremely unimportant scenes that last mere seconds; that makes it so difficult to fast-forward an episode. (Because one might accidentally miss certain key scenes of a certain key character.)

So you see, fourteen episodes down and I’m still divided about the drama. I do not know why it’s called New Gisaeng Story, for example. So far none of the young gisaeng at Buyonggak is an important role; we don’t even know their names. I’m guessing Sa-ran and maybe even Ra-ra (and the two girls who hang out with these two) could eventually become a gisaeng at Buyonggak.

But maybe I’ll be wrong again. Maybe the “new gisaeng story” won’t be any of the girls’ stories, it will be someone else. Someone who comes along, most unexpectedly, and becomes Buyonggak’s most prized gisaeng. Should it be the someone below, you’ll hear a scream so loud it’ll fell trees within a fifty-mile radius.

  1. I agree with you completely! I keep thinking that I’m not going to watch anymore then I get caught up again. I thought I had it all figured out but it doesn’t seem to going in where I thought it would at all so… I guess I’ll stay with it for now. We shall see :)
I really enjoy your writing – thank you

  2. I’ve watched eps 21 and 22 raw. That’s how addicted I am.
Da-mo is hot, he instantly caught my eye (and most likely thousands other womens as well )
I do wish they would have showed more of the Gisaeng story, I read that the writes has been receiving some criticism for the almost non-existant Gisaeng story line.
I also agree that the actress who acts Sa-ran is a bit meh but it’s because she so rarely even smiles or shows something more then being perfect. (but in some scenes she’s shown some intensity) and she and Da-mo have some nice chemistry.
But anyhoo waiting for more eps, this is just crazy how addicted I am.

    • What do you think now that the story’s moving firmly in the Gisaeng house direction?

    • The actress who plays Sa Ran was the sister to the lead in Paradise Ranch. She was the high school student who had a crush on the 2nd leads assistant. She was very feisty in that role. I think she’s playing her role well here. That calm, quiet, determined, knows what she’s about person.

      • Oh my goodness, I would have never guessed for a moment that it was her in Paradise Ranch!
Acting sure changes the whole persona about a person. I love these two, her quiet strength and boyish cuteness of Ah Da Mo is awesome!!!

  3. Does this post sounds like a love declaration or what??? “There’s also that deep, deep voice. And the eyes.” The lips, you forgot THE LIPS!!!!!
I’ve been dying to begin this drama, but I’m still waiting to accumulate more episodes so I can marathon it. I’ve been reading the recaps from a blog and that alone convinced me to watch it.
    Please keep up posted :)
    Besitos!

    • How about the nose? And the brows? And the…

You know, we could be here all day.

      • Don’t leave out being here all ‘night’!

You voiced my between and betwixt about this drama. And, I’m hoping that the writer doesn’t disappoint us with too much meandering by the main couple and especially the non-sense of the last few episodes of her ‘previous drama’.

    • Where do u read the recaps………I’ve looking for recaps on this show to read cos cannot wait for the sub which can be rather slow sometimes like for ep 21 & 22. Ep 19 & 20 was fast.

  4. “Sometimes the guy loves with all his heart but all the girl sees is another guy with hair like a nest.”….LMAO!

  5. Even though this writer’s more known for her Assorted Gems, I sort of prefer her earlier Dear Heaven/Love in Heaven drama. While I didn’t really click with Assorted Gems (because I got wind of the ending and checked out really quickly), I really hoped New Gisaeng Story goes along the lines of Dear Heaven (and they are similar in some ways). However, after watching the recent episodes (21 and 22), I’m beginning to wonder if I should take a hiatus and come back after a while. She’s destroying Damo’s character just to move the story along. Unfortunately, it’s going to come back and bite her in the ass when she’s trying to get the two main characters in a way that’s going to make sense. Personally, no amount of destruction to his character will make me like him less. However, there are people who aren’t like me… so she’s going to have to do damage control control.

I’m sorry if this contained any spoilers for those who didn;t want to know. Sorry…

  6. Bwahahaha! I totally did not expect thundie to be drooling appreciative of Sung Hoon. And wow, you’ve been busy. The last time you posted, you were on the first episode and now you’re already on episode 14, whereas I’m still stuck on episode 8.

I got all the other drama references, but this: “Sometimes the guy loves with all his heart but all the girl sees is another guy with hair like a nest.” YB or BOF?

  7. Yup thundie, you’re definitely watching NToG, alright, you’re experiencing all the usual symptoms.
I actually believe Im Sung-han has a plan. No joke, and she’s doing well, her writing’s definitely peppered with flaws but she’s getting more right than she is wrong so all is forgiven.
I think episode 15 is a bad time to drop out, you’ve got TONNES to look forward to, so much happens after that. In fact 16 is one of my favourite episodes. I think you should let 22 be your dealbreaker.

If you plan to continue watching just be prepared with the tissues, episode 20 was a really weepy episode. But a cathartic one at that, one where I really appreciated the writer’s slower pace and understood its purpose.
Aah, Damo. Y’know he has serious competition in scene stealer Sonja. There’s also ‘Doc’, the younger Eo-san. Everytime there’s a scene with him, I’m willing him to have a flashback of himself again so I can lust after the hottie playing his younger version. Hee!

    @millie10468
I honestly don’t think his character’s been ruined at all. I think we’ve known for a while that he has a lot of growing up and wisening up to do. I actually love that he doesn’t really fit into the archetypal ‘poor little rich boy’ mould. He’s definitely lived a sheltered life and that shows. I absolutely loveloveloved what happened in episode 22 though, Saran was freakin’ fantastic! Go sistahl! (Or maybe I’m just evil and need my kicks.)

P.S. I think the actresses playing Gong-joo and Ra-ra are the breakout stars, they’re such naturals.

    • I think that scene with Saran and Damo was my favorite scene so far! Whoever said Saran was passive and dull obviously hasn’t seen ep 22. She’s no doormat, theats for sure!

I get that Damo isn’t supposed to be the stereotypical “poor little rich boy” type but I feel like if the writer goes any further with his character flaws, it’ll be hard for me to root for him and Saran later on. As it is right now, he doesn’t deserve her one little bit. But I suppose with long dramas like these, we get to see the character grow in more ways than one.

    • Not dropping out, supah. :D How could I, when the male lead’s name is Da-mo? *crutches chest and wails, “Naeuri!!!!!”*

I agree that the actresses playing Ra-ra and Gong-joo are very good. Can’t believe I got so distracted I forgot to mention Gong-joo in my post. *points finger of blame at a certain newbie actor*

      • Yay! So glad you won’t be dropping out — and abandoning Damo.
Wait till you see the two girls in episodes 16 onwards, that’s when they get really good, hehe!
I know Han Hye-rin is already flooded with CF offers which is great for her as a total n00b, and Baek Ok-dam is generating a bit of a buzz for herself, which is great too, I find her utterly adorable.
I understand how the writing is a little hit and miss right now, but I’ve heard Im Sung-han has returned to her pre-Assorted Gems style of writing, which was writing quality melodramas, she’s done it many times before and it does seem to me that she knows what she’s doing. I’m happy to ignore the flaws and just let her lead the way. Hopefully we won’t all wind up disappointed.
P.S. Speaking of Damo, have you noticed we have a Seondeok too? *flees to scene before thundie gets ready to hurl*.

millie: I still think he could have been written far worse (a number of spoiled, stinkin’ rich kdrama lead characters come to mind *shudders*), plus I don’t feel his intentions are necessarily bad, he just doesn’t know how to go about things and ultimately makes everything SO much worse, but I am enjoying his amusingly clumsy, foot-in-mouth, own-worst-enemy tendencies. Hahah! Oh Damo!
Yeah, he has a LOT of growing up to do, and thankfully there are plenty of episodes left to accommodate that.

  8. I watched this up until about episode 18 and I dunno… got kind of bored, I guess. To think there will be 50 episodes of this had me questioning whether or not I have it in me to stick with it for the long haul. But from the comments regarding the more recent episodes, maybe I will give it another go.
Because I *love* Sung Hoon’s portrayal of Da-mo and even though I can sense his “green”ness at times, I can easily write it off as part of the character: that he can seem a bit too stoic, for example. But! The camera clearly loves Sung Hoon (as much if not more so than I do) and nearly every time he’s onscreen, I’m mesmerized. And not just because he brings the pretty, but he has that certain “it” factor that cannot be taught and cannot be bought.
I really like most of the other characters, as well, especially Ra-ra and Gong-joo (the actress portraying the latter reminds me quite a bit of Gong Hyo-jin). Here’s hoping we see more of them in the future.

    • …he has that certain “it” factor that cannot be taught and cannot be bought.

Man, I’m totally bottling up this quote. Awesome description of the guy!!

  9. I watched half of Ep 1.. and immediately Sung Hoon caught my eye! So he’s like never heard of? Rookie?
Man def has smoldering eyes <33

I'll watch more to give a better judgment.. so far so good..

  10. Hi ‘thundie,
just came from soompi. when i saw you have something to say about
NToG i immediately logged off and came straight here. i wanted so
bad what you think about this drama and i’m so releived that you like
it. and it flashback to me BL , the way how you describe LSG , and now
you’re doing the same to SH. this guy is just sooo amazing. lots of sex appeal.
good chemistry with his leading lady. is the author the same in Assorted Gems?
i love that drama too. i think the author knows how to captivate the ladies audiences
by choosing a leading man with oozing sex appeal.
i look forward to your next recap . take care.

    • Hi Winnie! I’m glad you’re enjoying New Gisaeng Story. The author’s the same one who wrote 2009′s Assorted Gems (aka “said previous drama”).

  11. woah~~

i’m hooked so far as well, just to see how the stories will pan out….
yeah, those little random split-seconds scenes that cut in from nowhere were kinda annoying as well, but i think those got lesser in the recent episodes?

and thundie, with your infatuation with Da-mo, i thought that you would have mentioned that ginormous photo of himself in his room (look at the first photo on this post)…..puwhahaha

    • Oh, raye, you have no idea how desperate determined I was to use that particular pic (of Da-mo and his likeness) as the main image and how long I tinkered with the title of this post just so it would made sense why I was using that image! I mean, a first-impressions review of a drama about gisaeng and I choose a non-gisaeng pic to head the post? How do I pull that off without looking too obvious? I practically had to write the post around that image while trying not to look as though I wrote the post around the image! Thus… after the lengths I went through to hide my ulterior motives, would I still mention that photo?

Sigh. I don’t think my feeble explanation makes any sense. Never mind. Mission (use gorgeous Damo+likeness pic) accomplished!

  12. Is that last pic Damo in drag?

  13. I have watched 20 episodes in a row and now I am just watching episodes 21 and 22 raw ! The male lead is a real beauty and we can watch him sometimes very close and half naked : ha has all for him , even the voice . I enjoy this drama quite a lot because it is so refreshing ; everyone is well acting , the pace is slow and it is almost as if we were living with them : so good !
Now I ‘ ll wait for the subbing of the last week-end episodes ; fortunately the next week-end is soon . But I like also Midas , Royal Family and Crime squad .
Nevertheless Gods of k dramas have given us a real man, A-list .
Thanks , dear Thundie , for spreading the good news .

    • The male lead is a real beauty…

Gods of k dramas have given us a real man, A-list.

Can’t agree more. The guy’s a real head-turner and it’s so hard to resist screencapping his every scene! Am very curious to know more about his background. How was he discovered, was he a model previously, did he come from the theater… There’s pactically nothing about him on the Net! Maybe Soompi has the answers, but I don’t want to read the thread until I’m all caught up with the drama. Mic, where are you?

  14. hii thundie~~ lol ya the name damo ..whenever i have to type his name , i keep thinking back to why did they name him with such a name ~!! .frankly the drama start pretty interesting than it become boring because it never show how it is going into the gisaeng story ..but seem like things are getting interesting again with her in the Gisaeng house . i always thought this writer/director production tend to pick the most beautiful person to be lead haha ..like in Dear Heaven .~

anyway .one of the other pair i am rooting for is Saran real parents lol .~

PS: nice to read your posting again! fighting!

    • he is called Ah Damo after the belgian singer Adamo who sings Tombe la neige . There are many winks in this drama – which is another charm of it . Shall I say the name of the dog and the referring to a drama called Aurora Princess where they say the male lead is half gay …

  15. Thundie ~

Watching this drama along with Midas, Sparkle (Twinkle, Twinkle?), and a couple of C-dramas because I can’t wait from week-to-week for two more episodes, it’s crazy-making.

I am at the point where I want to shake the writer to learn if the main couple end together. If yes, I can wait. If not, well… that would make more sense and I can wait. But WHY wait 28 more episodes??? Hope she can hear my teeth gnashing.

Wondering if the writer intends this drama to be a contemporary version of Gisaeng Story in which the female lead is a tragic figure who forsakes all relationships for art (and because of status differences), or a love story where the female lead is a tragic figure who overcomes obstacles to live happily-ever-after?

  16. hi thundie, soooo glad you onboard NTOG, i always enjoy you writing and read everything you wrote, you seemed back to your old self so hope and pray all is well with you and your loved one. and this post delurk me out. you’re right, damo has the look and feel of a real aristocrat chaebol and not just play one on tv, he’s IT ! can’t get enough of damo and saran my favorite OTP to date.
thank you and please keep it coming……. : )

  17. Hi, thundie. It is so good to read your work again. The read was enthralling and thought-provoking as usual.

But I’m afraid I’m one of those people millie mentions who aren’t like her, namely people who like Da-mo less because of his character assassination. The two most romantic and touching scenes of any Kdrama, in my opinion, occurred when Da-mo picked out Sa-ran’s hairpin and Sa-ran’s smiling response in her bed later reliving that scene, and when Da-mo, overcoming the way he was brought up not to mention his immaturity, stops over and over again before he finally decides to kneel in front of Sa-ran, and Sa-ran in return shows the grace and compassion to stop her soul mate from denigrating himself in front of her.

It’s these kinds of thoughtful and caring scenes between the two love-at-first-sight thunderbolts (sorry thundie for borrowing your name) that set the tone for what to expect from these two characters. The writer initially gives us a guy who wants to be different from his father, who wants to be a different kind of husband and a father than his own father, a guy who stands up to his father on numerous occasions, the very guy who tries his best to help his mother stand up to her husband, and then poof, he drops his soul mate like a rag because he’s suddenly worried about what his father would say?

Was he force fed werewolf’s blood while he was in Hong Kong? He has suddenly become a spineless, brainless, and heartless guy who’s content marrying a thug of a woman as long as she bears him a child? And all he can come up with to satisfy his innate need to be near Sa-ran is to be her foster sibling? Sorry, but he has become too senile, too wimpy, and too lame for me to identify let alone like his character.

The writer has tossed Da-mo character under the bus as if we the audience have no neurons or feelings and expect us to welcome him back with open arms when he conveniently changes just enough in the future when he is no longer despicable, intolerable, and remotely resemble a human being?

The story and the characters have to be somewhat believable for us to stay emotionally attached to the character. If I were dating a woman and she did what Da-mo did without telling me why, it would shake the very foundation of what I thought of her. From an audience standpoint, when Hyun Bin character from Secret Garden was being a royal jerk over and over again, the writer gave us ample background and plausible rationales to account for his behavior, and we could see the delicate balance he was trying to juggle between his overwhelming attraction toward Ha Ji-won’s character and the tugging conflict from the way he was brought up, so that the audience had, in most part, no problem identifying and even empathizing with the Os character.

Here, the writer gives us a night and day, before and after, Jekyll and Hyde kind of contrast between the two characters practically overnight. If her intention was to depict Da-mo’s character as uneven, coarse, and immature, then stay there and bring him up gradually and realistically. Don’t make him a caring and sensitive guy and then out of blue make him a guy with sensitivity and an IQ of a rabid wolf.

Okay, I’m done with my venting. Sorry, thundie, I want you to know that my ranting and raving is not meant to discourage others from finishing the drama, because I don’t intend to stop watching. I just won’t enjoy it as much as I could have.

Welcome back, thundie, to the insanity of Kdrama! :)

    • Oh, Michael, it’s great to read your point of view. I’ve really, really missed your writing!

I’ve watched three more episodes and should be all caught up with Ep 22 by tomorrow night (love weekends because they are a much-needed respite from the new normal). Am sharpening my knives preparing my next post with LOTS to say about the Da-mo character and the latest plot turns. Trying very hard to understand the writer’s intentions. I don’t want to let my lingering disappointment with the Assorted Gems ending affect my feelings about New Gisaeng Story. After all, I would hate for someone to judge my overall writing based on just one or two pieces of my work. On the other hand, I can’t help feeling really afraid of what she might do to the story and characters. I’m already seeing some random and pretty illogical developments that just chill me. Well, we’ll see. My next post will be about Episodes 15-22.

Psst, your two favorite scenes are mine as well. :D

    • I think the whole thing about Da Mo is his pride . It’s not randomly that the writer picked such a smart actor with something sombre in his physionomy . He is both a man who has a kind heart and a man who wants to be acknowledged by his father ( that was the beginning of the drama ) and a man who has a big pride ; see the episode in the swimming-pool when he brags upon the glass on his fronthead and how arrognatly he rides horses . I really think that the writer did a great job in delivering a several-sided character . Is everyone one piece in trus life ? He doesn’t want to surrender completely to Saran because his father did’nt surrender to his wife . But gradually he will have to .
Nice to read you . Have a happy day !

  18. I actually think this drama is even more interesting now, with all the added crazy turn of events. True, Damo is now bigger ass than he was, but he was kind of an ass to start out with, and since I never really did (and still don’t) find him all that attractive or a great actor, I don’t really care that much about just how big of an ass he really is. a really big ass or a medium ass or small ass. it’s just well.. ass.

I also don’t really care about Sa Ran all that much either. She kinda rubs me the wrong way, sorta like how Bichwi kinda annoyed me, when the whole world loved her. The inner bitch kinda scares me or something to that line. However I do wish her well in the end. Her circumstances are truly very pitiful. Damo, on the other hand, I could care less how he ends up. But I do agree that he and Sa Ran have great chemistry together. I especially think they are hot together when they fight.

My favs are Ra Ra, Gong Joo, and Sohn Ja, but from my stance…. I actually don’t really care how this drama will end. I am actually truly grateful that Kyle was brought back and it was still the same Kyle. I was traumatized by the ending of Assorted Gem somehow. I think it’s def. not healthy and I’m definitely probably not normal, but I just needed to see Kyle again and I did, so I’m good w/ the drama. I’ll be grateful with whatever Writer Im throws at me. Thank you. I cry no more.

  19. Reading through everyone’s comments, now I’m super curious. What exactly happened at the end of this “said previous drama” that has everyone worked up about it? Or is it something that should not be discussed as it would reopen up old wounds and bring back painful memories for many folks here?

I do remember reading that Kyle and Ruby did not end up together at the end. Is this what is bothering everyone? Sorry, I never watched AG… oops, I mean the said previous drama.

  20. Hi Thundiie,

AUGHH, it looks like I picked the wrong drama to watch as I went with Star’s Lovers. Luckily, a third of the way through I found the recaps so I didn’t have to subject myself to any more torture (although I admit I only kept watching that long for the double eye candy of the two male leads.) I will definitely start NToG now, especially since I’m really curious to see how Kyle fits into it. Will you keep us updated with your comments as you progress? They are always so entertaining!

  21. I finally found a site discussing my current favourite kdrama. Thank God. I was dieing to know what others think of this drama & their comments. Thank you Thundie.
I totally agree with you….when I first saw ADM, he reminds me of Lee Byung-Hun in Beautiful Days (1st kdrama that I saw & has never regretted since)…….his smoldering eyes & proud air. I also love his lips….pouty…so kissable. Do you noticed that he got nice long eye lashes?
My favourite scene so far is the hug scene when he sent her home after dinner with his grandma. Seems so tender ….& to convey how he missed her so.
I have watched ep 23 & 24 raw & dieing to know what was actually said. Very interesting ep. ADM joined Buyonggak to be with Sa Ran?

  22. D-deep voice? Now I’m interested. lol

  23. thundie i’m so addicted to the drama i need help. ngl i got hooked by Sung Hoon as Ah Da Mo from ep 1. who is this rookie actor. he’s a looker and can act. will be stanning your blog again like i did during SSKS. hugz.

  24. I love, love reading other people’s thoughts about a drama I am taking interest in. This helps me decide if I should go or not. Actually I already decided I would the first time I saw Sung Hoon – his eyes says a lot – his eyes talks! Ahh! what else do I say about Ah DaMo? For a newbie, he can act.

I sure will follow your thoughts until the end of this drama – which I believe I have no choice since there are only a few left.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  25. Epsiode 43 & 44 are the best.

  26. I came in late for this drama….. and OMG, was i glad not to miss the bus ! Started 1 week ago and get to marathon from epi 1 to epi 46 within 5 days and now gasping for air, hehe. Just saw epi 47 and epi 48 raw and waiting for the subs.

Hunting desperately for recaps and comments and suddenly chanced upon thundie…. thank the gods that thundie loves Adamo too. The 2 main leads Sung Hoon and Im Soo Hyang kinda create some sorts of magic on screen….. they both have that ‘star’ quality here and whenever they appeared together on screen, the screen truly sizzles.

How is it that there’s hardly any buzz about this drama and the actors? esp Sung Hoon? Wish there’s more write-up on him……… As of now, he’s a bit on the mysterious side – hardly any facts/data on him, except that he’s a 6 footer, aged 28, an aquarious and a total rookie in the acting field.

Thanks, thundie……just love reading you. And the comments here….very interesting too ! I love that we here all love Sung Hoon :) ( or rather, almost all love him, hehe)

  27. Hi ! I know that I’m really late for this drama, but I had just watched it now and I’m very glad that there are many people who likes this drama. I’ve wathced episodes 1-49, but I can’t remember from what episode was that picture above where Da Mo almost kissed Sa Ran. I would just want to know and watch that part.

    ♥♥♥
