Titans on our screen

This page is for all the male veteran actors that we adore, the ones who play dads and grandpas and rulers and kingpins with such finesse and flourish we are simultaneously awed and humbled.

Go ahead and wax poetic. Or share how torn you were inside as you watched a performance such as Jung Bo Seok’s in the 2010 drama, Giant. The more he blew you away with the power of his acting, the more you hated his villainous character! Post pics, clips (I’ll embed these for you) and anything else that is related. This is a tribute page so rave away!

  1. My first two kdramas were Winter Sonata and Beautiful Days and I didn’t like any of the older male characters. No recollection of who played what!

My third drama was Have We Really Loved and that was where I discovered Joo Hyun. I would go on to learn that he’s a Noh Hee-kyung staple; I have since watched him in four of her dramas: HWRL, Lie, Solitude and More Beautiful Than a Flower.

He’s 70 years old this year and has acted in about 34 dramas! Does anyone else like him?

      • Loved Seoul Ddookbaegi as well. I’ve watched it as a child and I remember loving it. I remember a young Choi Soo Jong was in it and my brother-in-law used to do a perfect Ahn Shi Ajusshi imitation.

  2. Even thought Cinderella’s sister is not the best drama out there, I loved so much the father Kim Gab Soo played! He was amazing there… loved him so much!!!

And Jung Bo Seok amazed me in can you hear my heart? I never saw him acting in other drama, but now I must not miss any of his dramas!

  3. I love grandpa Im Hyunsik! I haven’t seen him in a lot of projects, but I’ll always remember him in Bad Family as the fake partriarch. He just puts a smile to my face.

Son Hyunjoo is my absolute favourite. His storyline in What’s Up Fox actually ended up being such a highlight of the drama, that I looked him up to see his other projects. But it was Sol Pharmacy that solidified my love. If I remember correctly, Sol Pharmacy was my first long drama, and I remember crying my eyes out at 4 in the morning in his playground scene. Gahhh, he’s awesome.

My current ahjussi crush is Cheon Hojin, thanks to City Hunter and now Hooray For Love. I wish he would play a villain again a la Goong S tho, sessy sessy ahjussi.

    • Wow, I just checked and Im Hyun-sik has acted in 50+ dramas and 10 movies! He’s 66 years old this year. He has such a warm smile.

      And yes, Son Hyun-joo!! *squees*

      Here’s your ajusshi crush, LOL.

      • I think this is the same man who portrayed a homeless guy in Life Special Investigation Team with Uhm Ki-joon a really good drama I watched on Drama Fever.

  4. I’m going to have to say Lee Soon Jae… isn’t he another that’s in just about everything? He’s been acting since 1966! wow :) He was born in 1935! :) he’s one of my most beloved grandpa’s even when he’s being a meanie…

  5. Ooh… Love Son Hyun Joo. He can literally pull off anything – heroic, skeevy, charming, goofy. And a drama special king. *Runs off to watch Special Crime Squad MSS*

    • Ahn Nae-sang, HWAITING!!

After Protect the Boss, I need to go watch a likable ANS role. Two consecutive sleazy roles (Royal Family and PTB) ain’t healthy for moi!

  6. I like the grandmother in Family’s Honor, dont know her name but she is in almost every drama, amazing acting talents what with having to act as a old grandma and then when I saw her again in Assorted Gems, laughed my head off, she can be so funny!
Korea has a group of amazing veteran actors & actresses who are really talented. I hope they will share their experiences with the young ones,

  7. Jung Bo Seok!!!! I still cannot get over how amazing this actor is, from Giant to Can You Hear My Heart! o_0

Of course, I can only stare at Kim Gap Soo, cos he’s been claimed aiks.

  8. Can we add the man who played Prosecutor Young-ju’s father in City Hunter, Jin-gook’s father in Dream High, and Choi Han-Gyul’s father in Coffee Prince? I don’t know his name mostly because I’m usually too head over heels for his sons but he’s pretty awesome!

  9. I applaud them all, all those you’ve mentioned and I’d like to add Park Geun-hyeong, Shin Goo and lesser known but absolutely brilliant (!!) Min Jeong-gi. (aka. Grandpa Pear and Norgunri’s janggi champ.)

      • I wish he was in everything, I think I have only seen him in two dramas, even then he appeared for mere seconds in one of those two. I want to watch Ruler of your own World, but it’s still nowhere to be found.

        • Dude, looked at his dramawiki page and it is loooong, not to mention his movie roles:

  10. Anyone here a fan of Byun Hee-bong?

I’ve watched him in 10 dramas and movies and adore him to bits. He can play anything, from kindly grandpa (1% of Anything) to not-so-kindly grandpa (My Girlfriend is a Gumiho) and off-kilter dog murderer (Barking Dogs Never Bite). He was a monster force in The Host.

    • Oh yes! I forgot about him. He is one of my faves!!! I’ve seen him in 13 movies and dramas apparently too just looking at his hancinema page.

  11. OMG! Did I forget to mention Choi Min-soo?! How could anyone forget him? ‘Nother true titan of our screens!

His most iconic, epic role to date, Gangster Park Tae-soo (Sandglass).

Single father living in destitute poverty Kang Man-ho (Father’s House) — such a wonderful, memorable role, so brilliantly acted, I wept buckets.

Of course, Cheon! (Warrior Baek Dong-soo).

One of my first dramas watched was Ballad of Han River which also starred CMS and I liked his character lots, but I don’t think it was one of his better projects.

  12. Most of you seem to have gotten all of my favorite veterans….I’d also like to add Ahn Suk Hwan to the list…He was in my first ever kdrama, Sassy Girl Choon Hyang playing a stern yet adorable dad to Jae Hee after which I saw him in My Girl where he and Choi Ran played a hilarious couple….in the first two years of my drama watching he was in nearly every other drama and and this helped built my soft spot for the guy….nowadays I dont see him as much…last I saw him was in the much dabhorred, Personal taste

  13. Sorry for the late post…

  15. Jung Ho Bin (Jeong Ho Bin) in Jumong, Queen Seonduk and Chuno is a titan actor in my book. Please consider him for a top spot in listing

  16. Kim Sang Joong rocks. Really. Despite a rotten character in City Hunter (shhh, no spoilers, haven’t finish it yet!), he is a real titan. How a man who looks kind and common do so he is smokin’ at every single appearance? Old, but terribly charismatic.
(I’m french, my bad for the mistakes.)

Have your say
